Let's put all the other answers to bed on this one.

It doesn't matter which quality you buy (unless you want to buy it for investment), because neither will last longer than the other. 18k just means that the gold is more pure than the 14k. ALL WHITE GOLD IS PLATED IN A PROCESS CALLED RHODIUM PLATING. While this does NOT mean that it will "chip" like what you're probably picturing now, it DOES mean that the whiteness of it will eventually fade away, requiring you to re-rhodium plate your ring about once per year. This can cost you in the neighborhood of $50-$70.

Oh, and yellow gold isn't "sprayed", it's dipped in a process called Rhodium Electroplating.

If you want to maintain the whiteness of the ring, you are better of buying platinum, but don't forget two things: 1. Platinum is considerably more expensive and 2. It is a softer metal than gold, making it much more susceptible to dings from everyday wear.

So, ultimately, it is your choice- either buy the gold (doesn't matter which) and spend less now, but spend $50-$70 per year on maintenance or buy the platinum and spend more now, but less on maintenance.

White gold is an alloy of gold with other metals like nickel or palladium. It tends to have duller finish so it's usually plated with rhodium in order to give it a shinier look like you would have with platinum.
I'd say go with platinum and you'll have a finish that will last. Most of your plated items are of a lesser quality and will dissappoint you later on.

there is no white gold its yellow sprayed with white. in time lots of time the white fades. then u will see the yellow but i love white gold all of mine is white. if it gets discolored they can always respray it but it take a very long time for this to happen so its worth the buy good luck
