Krugerrands. About $1000 each today, about $300 twenty years ago. Portable, safe, easily convertible. But, keep a Glock handy.

Here's a scary thought:

If I remember correctly, in 2004, a private firm done a poll as to how much gold and silver there is in the world as to how much is being sold. Well, if the poll was correct, it noted that the gold sold on paper to Americans in the continental 48 states would exceed the world's total amount.

What's the world going to do if these people say "I want my gold." oneman2dogs

I wish I had wealth to protect.
My only concern is collapse of the economy.
If paper money suddenly becomes worthless what do you use?
I have a small amount of silver coins, which due to their nature contain definable amounts of silver for trading.
This is all I can do at this point, and it is sort a 'last line of defense' rather than protecting wealth. HammerNH

Gold is a very inefficient form of wealth. A million dollars of pure gold weighs over 600 pounds. You would have to hire an armed force to protect your gold. If you were lost in a hot desert, what would you want? A 5 gallon barrel of water, or 50 lbs of gold? Mr. Derecho
