How to buy gold - Gold dollars vs. Gold coins?

gold buying
Bill D asked:

Hello,

I have an interest in buying gold. However, I am very confused by the different gold coins (american eagle, american buffalo) and the golden dollar. Can someone please breakdown the differences for me?

Specifically, are the golden dollars, such as the 2002 Golden Dollar (Denver Mint Mark A23) made of gold? Why does an american eagle cost so much?

Thank you

Gold coinage prices are set by an implied numismatic value rather than just their gold content. This numismatic value is unfortunately often times overstated in the advertising…..if you are convinced that coinage is the way you wish to go….I would advise sticking with a reputable numismatic house rather than purchase anything online. Also Just a point of interest for you……the 2002 Golden Dollar has no gold content at all…..The “golden” refers to its color not what it is made of.
