MMORPG with legit gold buying/selling options?

A while ago, I remember encountering an MMORPG where, using real money, you could exchange it for in-game money (and vice versa) via some in-game process in association with Paypal, or somesuch. Does anyone know the name of this game, and whether it is still up and running?
Yes, I’m sure that it worked both ways… it was touted that it was a *real*, working, economy. When it came out, I applied to beta test it, but was not selected, and in hindsight, I was curious to see how it was doing… but can’t seem to remember its name anymore. IIRC, it came out around the same time as TES: Morrowind did… maybe a little later.

dirkduff…: No, Guild Wars does *not* endorse gold/plat buying or selling in any way, shape, or form, and will, without hesitation, ban anyone who so much as *smells* as if they were buying or selling money, items, or accounts, let alone actually does it.
I’m talkin’ about *legit*, dev-approved buying and selling here.

I suspect there are many games that do this. I can think of a couple off the top. But are you sure you can trade the in-game money for real money? The game may not be running anymore if so.

You’re probably thinking about Second Life, which is still up and running.
Of course, there are a number of games with “item shops” that allow you to purchase a few things in the game for use and appearances, but they don’t allow for direct buying of money. Some, like Maple Story, are items for yourself. Some, like Pirate King Online, you can buy things that have regular prices on the market that were allowed to be sold.

You’re probably talking about Guild Wars. I think you can buy gold for other games, but I know for sure you can for Guild Wars. I used to play it alot, when I had no school or anything to attend to. I know you can find it on Ebay, cuz I had friends who bought gold online.
Whether or not you still can, i dont know, but thats most likely the game you were talking about.
