What happened to buying gold in United States?

I used to be able to go out to banks or jewelers and buy gold 5 years ago but now everywhere I go they say they do not sell gold and if they do, they charge a LOT of premium. What happened? Do we not have any gold in America?

There’s lots of gold in America, it’s just that everyone is hoarding it because of the economy.
